You should keep a few things in mind: Most juices remove most of the fiber from fruits and vegetables. For this reason, try to eat as many whole foods as possible. If you’re looking for a juicer, consider a “whole food juicer” that processes whole fruits or vegetables. If you use a juicer that leaves little pulp, use it for soup or dough so that the fiber is not wasted.
When using juice as a meal replacement, you may feel hungry faster than when eating a more traditional meal. It is not recommended to replace meals with juice unless it contains a healthy source of protein such as protein powder, yogurt, kefir, milk, or soy milk. This balances the carbohydrate content in the juice. You can also use nuts, seeds, or nut butter to add extra protein and healthy fats. Fruit juices can contain as many calories as non-alcoholic beverages. Try to reduce your portions of fruit juices, rinse them, or mix them with vegetable juices that have fewer calories. Leafy greens like spinach, Swiss chard, and kale contain large amounts of oxalic acid, which can lead to kidney stones. Don’t overdo it with these vegetables and drink plenty of water to prevent this painful health issue. Consider replacing this oxalate-rich vegetables with other vegetables such as green lettuce or cruciferous vegetables like arugula.
Since fresh produce can contain bacteria, you should wash fruits and vegetables before juicing. Choose organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible, especially those more likely to contain pesticide residues.
